How much time do South Africans spend on Social Media?
Social Media has become part of our daily routines, filling in the time gaps we have during breaks, meals and bedtimes. But do South Africans really know how much time they spend on Social Media?
Just oput into perspective of how big our nation is we should note that South Africa had a population of 59.67 million in January 2021. South Africa’s population increased by 741 thousand (+1.3%) between January 2020 and January 2021.
There were 38.19 million internet users in South Africa in January 2021. The number of internet users in South Africa increased by 1.7 million (+4.5%) between 2020 and 2021, which means that internet penetration in South Africa stood at 64.0% in January 2021.
There were 25.00 million social media users in South Africa in January 2021. The number of social media users in South Africa increased by 3.0 million (+14%) between 2020 and 2021. The number of social media users in South Africa was equivalent to 41.9% of the total population in January 2021.
There were 100.6 million mobile connections in South Africa in January 2021. The number of mobile connections in South Africa increased by 817 thousand (+0.8%) between January 2020 and January 2021. The number of mobile connections in South Africa in January 2021 was equivalent to 168.5% of the total population. Note: many people have more than one mobile connection, so figures for mobile connections may exceed 100% of the total population.
WhatsApp is the most popular social media in South Africa. As of the third quarter of 2020, some 93 percent of internet users in the country used the messaging app. YouTube and Facebook followed closely, with a penetration rate of 92 percent and 87 percent, respectively. The number of WhatsApp users in South Africa is estimated to reach 28.6 million users by 2026. In 2021, WhatsApp counted almost 23 million users in the country.
